Friendsgiving + Thanksgiving Recipes

This year I wanted to host a “Friendsgiving” with a few of my dear friends. Not only did it give me an excuse to actually cook a whole turkey, but also to gather friends for dinner. For those who don’t know what Friendsgiving is, it’s simple: Friends + Thanksgiving = Friendsgiving! It was a huge success, and I think it may be a new tradition. Cecily made a cherry pie. Sarah made the green bean casserole. Callista made the mashed potatoes and rolls. Lastly, I made the turkey, gravy and stuffing. Below are some photos from the day, some recipes from some of the items made, and links to products in this blog.

The raw turkey and all its glory. The turkey cooked surprisingly fast. I set the roaster oven on 350 and it was done in a little over four hours.

These two rarely can take a serious photo. Can you tell they are roommates? Because they have been for three years.


Garlic Red Mashed Potatoes:
5 lb bag of red potatoes
1 stick of butter
½ cup of milk
Salt & Pepper

Wash Potatoes. Bring water to boil. Add potatoes and cook until you can easily stick a fork in them. Drain water. Mash potatoes. Add 1 stick of butter to potatoes. Add half a cup of milk. Add salt, pepper and garlic to taste.
Green Bean Casserole via Paula Deen
1/3 stick butter
1/2 cup diced onions
1/2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
2 cups sliced green beans
3 cups chicken broth
1 (10 3/4-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1 (2.8-ounce) can French-fried onion rings
Pinch of salt & pepper
Pinch of garlic powder

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Melt the butter in a large skillet. Saute the onions and mushrooms in the butter. Boil green beans in chicken broth for 10 minutes and drain. Add the green beans, mushroom soup, onion rings, and House Seasoning, to taste, to the onion mixture. Stir well. Pour into a greased 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes, then top the casserole with the Cheddar and bake for 10 minutes longer, or until the casserole is hot and cheese is melted.
